Which College Degrees Are Right For You?

College degrees are important to many people, but they are also not all created equal. Several fields require specialized education, including computer science, information technology, and engineering. There are also a number of skilled trades that are in high demand and generally require an associate degree. Finding the right fit is all about self-assessment, but some majors are more in-demand than others. Feetham encourages students to consider the opportunities and learning environment of each program.

Professional licenses

There are two primary differences between professional licenses and college degrees. One is the legal status that is conferred upon a certificate, while the other reflects the formal training and proficiency in a field. Both types of certification are granted to professionals who have successfully passed an assessment. In most cases, both types of certification require a bachelor’s degree, but some may also require a master’s degree. A bachelor’s degree in any subject area is usually sufficient for both types of certification.

However, the two certificates can be used interchangeably for career advancement. While most college graduates receive a diploma at the end of their studies, some professions require professional licenses in order to practice their skills. These are usually shorter and focused on more practical areas of study. Diploma holders must pass a state-based licensing examination to become licensed practitioners of their respective fields. And although both types of credentials are valid, it is best to find out what your career goals are before deciding on the type of education that’s right for you.

Associate degrees

An associate degree can be your ticket into the workforce more quickly and cheaper than a fouryear bachelor’s degree. If you aren’t sure which career path you’d like to pursue, you can earn your associate’s degree and then transfer to a four-year institution and pay lower tuition fees for a couple years before you start your bachelor’s degree. And if you want to continue your education after graduating from college, you can get an additional associate’s degree while working full-time.

While associate degrees in college are cheaper than bachelor’s degrees, they’re not free. The average public two-year college student will receive enough financial aid to pay for tuition. It can come in the form of federal student loans, grants and scholarships, as well as work study positions. Depending on the school, an associate’s degree can be completed in as little as two years. Having an associate’s degree can mean a higher salary and more time to pay off your student loan.

Bachelor’s degrees

While bachelor’s degrees are typically earned at the university level, they are also available to people who have completed four years of college. Students who achieve a bachelor’s degree earn the right to work in certain professions. For example, a bachelor’s degree in secondary education qualifies someone to teach high school. The bachelor’s degree is a common entry requirement for many jobs, and the degrees are similar in terms of length, requirements, and type.

In general, bachelor’s degrees take four years to earn. You can expect to complete 120 semester credits, or 40 college courses, in four years. Most bachelor’s degree programs require students to complete general education courses, which develop a solid academic foundation and enhance critical thinking skills. In addition, there are required credit hours in your major field, so you can advance in your chosen career. You can also further your education by pursuing graduate studies if you have sufficient college credits.

Master’s degrees

While bachelor’s degrees are a general foundation for further academic and professional achievement, master’s degree programs are tailored to the specific needs of professionals in their particular field. Most master’s degree programs are comprised of coursework, comprehensive exams, and research requirements, and may take between two and four years to complete. Because of the subjective nature of research and dissertation writing, the duration of master’s programs can vary. In some cases, students may complete the program in as few as one year or two semesters.

In some fields, master’s degrees are the only degree that’s required to be able to hold a job. The length of a master’s program depends on the verifiabledegree.com and skills of the student. Those with bachelor’s degrees in the same field as their master’s degree may not need introductory courses and may be able to jump right into their program without taking any prerequisites. Other jobs require advanced training and doctorate degrees.

Doctoral degrees

Generally, a doctorate requires a master’s degree, but you can earn it in as few as 12 months. This is the highest level of formal education and includes coursework, comprehensive exams, and research requirements. Although most doctorates require a master’s degree, some programs integrate it as part of the curriculum. While many doctorates have a specific completion date, others can take up to five years to complete. This is due to the subjective nature of research and the dissertation.

The doctorate is usually three to four years long, although some universities offer part-time programs. In general, doctoral degrees require anywhere from 60 to 120 college credits to complete. The duration of a doctoral degree depends on your educational background and the area of study. Some programs require students to complete a research thesis, which can be a part of the course. A capstone project is also required, as well as supervised work placement.
